Wales TUC
The Wales TUC is the voice of Wales at work. With 48 member unions, the Wales TUC represents around 400,000 workers. The Wales TUC campaigns for a fair deal at work and for social justice at home and abroad.
“The Wales TUC recognises that the climate and nature emergency is one of the gravest threats we face. We welcome the Welsh Government’s ambitious new climate targets to reach net-zero by 2050, with decisive action in the next decade.”
“As trade unions, we are committed to organising and mobilising to protect our planet for future generations and to standing up for fairness for workers, especially during times of change. We have called for a just transition to net-zero –a transition that is done with workers and communities, not to them. It’s one that builds a greener, fairer and more equitable future that protects jobs, our health and the planet.”
“We must prevent a repeat of the mistakes of the past, when whole communities were left behind by industrial change. With proper planning and funding, tackling the climate and nature emergency will not mean fewer jobs but could actually increase the number of good quality jobs. But we know that a just transition will not happen by itself, and time is running out.”
“The UK government needs a properly funded green industrial strategy that matches its rhetoric on climate ambition. Good green jobs should be at the heart of our economic recovery from the pandemic. But the UK government’s plans are nowhere near ambitious enough.”
“Funding must urgently be increased at a UK level to enable Welsh Government to fund its own climate priorities. Every area needs good green jobs, close to home. We can revitalise towns and communities that have lost traditional industries, and make better jobs available to the millions in insecure jobs on poverty pay. In Wales, trade unions, Welsh Government and employers are working together in social partnership and trade unions will continue to campaign to ensure workers’ voices are heard. We need climate ambition with just transition and fair work for all in every workplace.”
