United Nations Association, Menai Branch (CCU Menai UNA)
The mission of the Menai UNA branch is to campaign and educate to make the ideals of the UN a reality. Within its limited resources it shares information on a range of issues and holds meetings and fund-raising events throughout the year. The branch serves north and mid-Wales. The branch was formed in 1989.
“The global situation on climate change currently threatens global chaos within decades. It is an existential threat to civilisation. To quote Dag Hammerskjold (the UN’s 2nd Secretary General), the United Nations, "…was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity from hell." Action now on climate change is fundamental to safeguarding world order and future generations. All Governments (national and local) should be promoting transformative change at every level, including encouraging their citizens to bring forward actions within communities to enable them to adapt and to mitigate climate change effects. The inadequacy of civil society mobilisation to address climate change points to a general lack of real understanding about this crisis. Meanwhile, numerous ‘Youth’ surveys show a better grasp of the situation but also a widespread and growing depression amongst young people. Yet there can be a more hopeful narrative. The Menai UNA branch believes it can play a modest but important role in explaining the nature of this existential threat, the role and advocacy of UN bodies for action on climate, and how the UN’s work is relevant to the climate and ecological emergency we now face and to the responses needed at the local and national levels.”
