Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel

Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel was formed in 2009 when a number of African diaspora groups in Wales met to consider how they might collectively advance their common interest in local and International Development.

“As a network of African communities in Wales, many of our members have seen the impact of climate change not just in countries/communities we come from but also the adverse impact it has on racialised communities in the UK. As diasporas, our members get to hear of weather changes and how that impacts their livelihood and way of living which in turn creates pressures for them to support communities back home. The role they play in climate is negligible but they are the ones affected the most. Due to lack of livelihood, many young people are seeking jobs and security elsewhere. We see more young people from lower-income countries wanting to leave their countries and taking treacherous journeys to get what they want. Within the diaspora community in Wales, many live in cities/towns where access to green spaces is hard to come by and air pollution is high, they experience climate change in similar and different ways to their counterparts in Africa. We believe that any action taken should have a global impact as one can not tackle climate change alone. A joint approach born out of acceptance that equity and responsibility lies on all states and no single state can take lead. ”
