FareShare Cymru

FareShare Cymru works to fight hunger by tackling food waste. Established in 2010, we take surplus edible food from the food industry and use this to help vulnerable groups, whether they are homeless, elderly, children, or other groups in food poverty within our communities. Since 2011 we have redistributed over 4447 tonnes of surplus food, enough to contribute to over 10.5 million meals and saving over 13,741 t Co2e.

Over two million tonnes of good-to-eat food goes to waste every year in the UK, from which 1.3 billion meals could be made. Across the entire UK supply chain, the equivalent of 27 million tonnes of CO2 is emitted from food waste, which is more C02 emissions than the entire country of Sri Lanka.

This is at a time when almost a quarter of the Welsh population (700,000) are living in poverty and people are struggling to access good, nutritious food and regularly go hungry. It is morally unconscionable and environmentally illiterate that in a time of so much need, there is so much waste. Every company, charity, and authority involved must work together now to get surplus food onto people’s plates.
