Let’s talk climate solutions!

19 September, 2021
By Paul Allen

Paul Allen from the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) gets ready to talk solutions as he welcomes the Climate.Cymru electric bus tour to the Mid Wales eco centre.

On 19 September, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is excited to host the Climate.Cymru round-Wales electric bus tour to help build a collective voice from Wales to feed into the COP26 summit in Glasgow, helping raise ambition for real climate action.

Climate code red

The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ‘Sixth Assessment Report: The Physical Science Basis’ makes it crystal clear that the climate emergency red light is flashing.

The urgent question for COP26 is rooted in how we radically increase the ambition of current commitments from countries across the globe and convert them into national deliverable action plans that really meet the scale and urgency of the challenge.

What happens in the run up to and during COP26 will have a huge impact on the delivery of a stable future climate for everyone on Earth. To meet the Paris Agreement commitment to aim to keep global temperature rise within 1.5°C and at least well below 2°C, actions must begin immediately.

As the host country, the UK must ensure that all countries are able to take part in the negotiations on an equal footing, and must show leadership with ambitious policies and commitment to immediate action to cut greenhouse gas emissions to meet the agreed budgets, not just pledges to meet far off targets.

Zero Carbon Britain

During the Climate.Cymru visit to CAT, we’ll be sharing our Zero Carbon Britain research, which over the past 15 years has brought to life solutions in energy, buildings, transport and land-use, exploring how we can radically reduce energy demand, scale up clean renewable energy, and transform what we eat and how we use land.

We’ll look at how we can tackle the climate emergency in a way that provides multiple benefits, including helping us to adapt to climate impacts, restoring biodiversity, improving public health, reducing fuel and food poverty, creating jobs and enhancing wellbeing.

Sharing solutions

We will also look at the work of CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain Hub and Innovation Lab, which helps turn climate and biodiversity emergency declarations into action.

With technical solutions readily available, the momentum is building in our towns and cities to reach net zero as quickly as possible. The Hub and Lab provide councils, communities and other organisations with the knowledge, confidence and skills to transform complex economic, social and political systems and achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

We deliver this through a range of training courses and events, detailed research reports, innovation lab processes and a free online resource hub which helps share the best available information with and between those working on solutions.

From our base in Mid Wales, CAT has been sharing solutions to environmental issues for nearly 50 years, providing skills, knowledge and inspiration to help everyone play a part in building a better future – from schoolchildren and families visiting our eco centre to postgraduate students learning about renewable energy, green building, sustainable food systems, and more.
