Why do you care about the climate?

We care on multiple levels. Partly because of the injustice of it – that so many beings (human and non-human) are suffering or being annihilated to satisfy the indulgences of an entitled few. Partly because we are suffering ourselves through our deep conscience – the unconscious guilt which comes from living a life of separation from nature. And partly through pragmatic self-preservation. The climate & biosphere is the foundation of our existence and we are inextricably part of nature. If we continue to exploit nature then we are also exploiting ourselves.

What action do you want to see from our leaders?

To disentangle governance and media from the grip of corporate profit-motive and lobbyists with conflicts of interest against the common good. To structure the economy around the wellbeing of people and planet, not economic growth or shareholder profit. To relinquish their paradigm of control and let power and decision-making disseminate to more bio-regional centres, adopting a role as facilitators, not controllers, as democracy was intended.

What gives you hope for the future?

The growing conscientiousness around social, environmental and economic justice. People generally want to do the right thing, and are coming to the realisation that material wealth is not the unmet need. What we are all searching for is purpose, connection and belonging – with each other, with nature, with ourselves. Those needs can be met joyfully with a light footprint.
