Blue Stag
Blue Stag is a creative and digital agency based in Cardiff. They work with organisations to help them make an emotional connection with audiences and cut through the noise. They care about doing work that helps make the world a happier, healthier or fairer place.
Why do you care about the climate?
We care about making the world a happier, healthier and fairer place. We believe we have an obligation to use our skills to influence change and to try to leave the world a better place than we found it. As a signatory of the UN Global Compact, we’re committed to promoting environmental responsibility.
We love our home city of Cardiff and, as a coastal city, it’s especially vulnerable to sea level rise and bigger storm surges. We want to make sure that Cardiff and Wales can continue to thrive in the decades to come, and to do our bit to create a better future for our communities here in Wales and around the world.
How is climate change affecting your business?
It’s easy to think creative and digital projects don’t have much impact on the environment. We’re not burning any fossil fuels ourselves, and we don’t tend to travel all that much (especially since coronavirus). But websites use a lot of energy, and that energy has to come from somewhere, so we’re working on switching to green servers.
It also influences the projects we agree to take on – we don’t want our creativity to be used for greenwash, and we’ve given our services to Climate Cymru for free.
What action do you want to see from our leaders?
We’re not experts on policy, but we want to see real ambition and commitment to change. We’re happy to make the changes we need to as a business, even if it means higher costs in the short term, but we need a policy framework from our leaders so we know what we need to do.
They need to think for the long term, too. We can’t trade in the futures of young people for short-term political gains.
What gives you hope for the future?
Young people. They care so much about our climate, and they recognise that we can’t keep treating the environment as an accessory to our lives. They see that we’re part of our environment, and the damage we do to our planet is damage we do to ourselves. They’re willing to speak out, make sacrifices, take risks. The Youth Climate Ambassadors are a great example of this, and we are just in awe of them.
We’re also inspired by the way the creative community is prepared to come together and volunteer its time to drive change. Climate Cymru has seen three small creative businesses – ourselves, Storm & Shelter and Grasshopper – work together with a whole series of third sector and civil society organisations, and all on a pro bono basis.
