Lucy Meredith

I'm almost 30, from Swansea but I lived for 5 years in Kenya, and I am now based in Neath. I am a Maths Teacher by profession but currently studying an MA at UCL in Education and International Development whilst volunteering for an environmental and education charity the Word Forest Organisation and an Education charity Inspiring Teachers. I am also involved in the Teach for All Climate and Education Community, leading sessions, in particular leading a session at our Teach for All Global Conference on October 29th, on Climate Education.

I am also attending COP26 for the full two weeks, as the event organiser for the Word Forest Organisation. I am vegan and I would consider myself an environmentalist and a climate feminist advocating for quality education, gender equity and action on improving the environment and climate change.

IN YOUR VIEW, WHAT DO OUR LEADERS HERE IN WALES, THE UK AND AROUND THE WORLD NEED TO DO TO SOLVE CLIMATE CHANGE?

Simply put, not enough. Progress has been made and it’s starting to make more mainstream media, maybe COP26 and the more recent issues and impact the climate crisis is having on weather, production, food, fuel and travel has had something to do with it! Listen to the science and actually follow through on guidance and push forward on proposals for sustainability. One area is education – both for children and adults alike. Another is transport – make eco friendly transport more affordable, after walking trains are the next best option but are too expensive! Then there’s eco cars which are again not affordable, yet! Many things, I could go on…

WHY HAVE YOU BECOME A CLIMATE CYMRU AMBASSADOR?

Having relocated back to Wales (from Kenya) I want to be involved in local groups but hopefully meet like minded people in South Wales whilst joining this important movement.

AS A NATION, WHAT DO YOU FEEL WE NEED TO DO TO TRULY INFLUENCE CHANGE?

Listen to, and connect with local people in Wales and listen to the Science, but also make realistic everyday suggestions to influence daily habits and lifestyle changes. Producing content that shows that giving up meat (for example) is not that difficult and is cheaper! Or various ways on living sustainably. Speaking to the every day person, through various lenses on a variety of topics, whilst we continue to speak to those who line the pockets of our Government, to help fund this change and move it forwards. We cannot wait for them, we must continue to take action and educate, connect with and empower individuals.

WHAT MAKES YOU OPTIMISTIC FOR THE FUTURE WITH REGARDS TO CLIMATE CHANGE?

The movement is growing and the youth, in particular, are speaking up for their future. COP26 is putting pressure on the worlds leaders so I am optimistic that this summit will have a positive impact.
