Ameerah is 22 and a first-language Welsh speaker having grown up in Llanberis, North Wales. After finishing her A-Levels, she went on to get my BA in History at Cardiff University, where she's now studying MSc International Relations with the aim of hopefully working for an NGO after.

In your view, what do our leaders here in Wales, the UK and around the world need to do to solve climate change?

The topic of tackling climate change invokes endless amounts of discussion, and there are many steps we could take to tackle climate change, but to name a few I’d say:

  1. Invest funding in green energy sources with active steps taken to cut fossil fuel consumption.
  2. Protect key ecosystems.
  3. As a “wealthier” country, the UK should help poorer nations who often bear the brunt of the effects of climate change; invest funding into helping “lesser-developed” countries implement green energy sources, so they no longer rely on fossil fuels.
Why have you become a Climate Cymru ambassador?

I’m passionate about Welsh representation (my Master’s dissertation research seeks to explore the impact of Welsh multilateralism on the global stage, a subject area that is scarcely explored) and I want to take an active role in tackling climate change.

As a nation, what do you feel we need to do to truly influence change?

We are fortunate enough to live in a society where we can use our voices to influence change. To truly influence change, we must our voices not only to convey our wishes to policy-makers, but also to educate others on the effects of climate change and spread awareness.

What makes you optimistic for the future with regards to climate change?

I see more and more young people making environmentally-conscious decisions in their daily lives: using shampoo bars, cutting down on single use plastic, going vegetarian/vegan. On my daily walk, I often see people picking up litter in the parks. These are all small steps, but if everyone did them, imagine the difference!
